High on Venus

Live performance durational

High on Venus is a performance in which the artist has made two replicas of the Venus of Willendorf, a prehistoric fertility sculpture dated to approximately 28,000–25,000 BCE. Through performance, the ancient figure is placed under the heel of the artist. The work becomes a balancing act of the female body, examining how it is restricted in society and shaped by objectification and capitalism, linking prehistoric ideals of fertility to present-day forms of control, balance, and display.

The performance was presented as part of the London Summer Intensive Programme 2015 at Camden Arts Centre, London. The programme, run jointly with the Slade School of Fine Art, is a four-week residency for emerging artists to develop independent practice. The performance was included in the work-in-progress showcase on 28 August 2015, curated by Jennie Lomax and Susan Collins.
